href=\"https:\/\/wildlifefriendly.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wildlife Friendly Enterprise Network <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(WFEN) is proud to announce that Nouabal\u00e9-Ndoki National Park has become our first Certified Gorilla Friendly\u2122 Park. Gorilla Friendly\u2122 certification guarantees the application of best practices in all gorilla-related operations, from tourism to research, to safeguard the well-being of the primates and ensure active support for and from the park&#8217;s neighboring communities.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Gorilla Friendly\u2122 certification is a program of WFEN and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/igcp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Gorilla Conservation Programme (IGCP)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This ecolabel is a first-of-its-kind initiative globally, offering the possibility of highlighting operations that provide direct benefits to gorillas \u2013 an umbrella species whose protection profits many other plants and animals. Threatened by habitat loss and poaching, gorillas represent a culturally, ecologically, and economically important resource, and their protection is an opportunity to actively bring together parks and neighboring communities.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The certification is obtained through a thorough process of verification of all protocols and their correct application in the field and requires an annual audit. It proves that the Nouabal\u00e9-Ndoki National Park\u2019s management follows the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/portals.iucn.org\/library\/sites\/library\/files\/documents\/ssc-op-038.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IUCN Best Practice Guidelines for Great Ape Tourism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and incorporates <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gstcouncil.org\/gstc-criteria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global Sustainable Tourism Council criteria for sustainable tourism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as Nouabal\u00e9-Ndoki National Park develops its tourism offering, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.afrik21.africa\/en\/congo-14-million-from-the-usaid-to-develop-ecotourism-in-the-nouabale-ndoki-park\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">generously funded by the United States Agency for International Development<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (USAID).<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Park operations are carried out with the highest ethical standards in the interests of animal welfare and have benefited the communities without whose knowledge it would be impossible to work in the forest, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wcscongoblog.org\/nestor-massembo-20years-megatransect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">creating job opportunities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and building local capacities, turning poachers into trackers, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wcscongoblog.org\/a-passion-for-wildlife\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trackers into researchers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and enforcing\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/congo-apes.org\/science\/health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strict protocols<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to guarantee animal health.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wildlife Conservation Society has been involved in the management of the Nouabal\u00e9-Ndoki National Park since its creation in 1993, and through a fruitful <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.wcs.org\/News-Releases\/articleType\/ArticleView\/articleId\/6104\/WCS-Statement-on-Public-Private-Partnership-Agreement-on-National-Parks-Management-Signed-with-Republic-of-Congo.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">public-private partnership<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between WCS and the Congolese Ministry of Forest Economy since 2014. Earlier this year, the Park <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.wcs.org\/News-Releases\/articleType\/ArticleView\/articleId\/18686\/Republic-of-Congo-Expands-National-Park-to-Include-Gorilla-Rich-Unlogged-Forest-English-and-French.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expanded in size to include the Dj\u00e9k\u00e9 Triangle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a gorilla-rich, unlogged forest in its southern part and home to the three habituated gorilla groups and research camp. The Triangle includes a community sustainable use zone, allowing for the continued collection of non-timber forest products and traditional fishing.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Gorilla Friendly Certification rewards the decades of work that have gone into habituating four (and soon to be five) groups of gorillas to human presence, leading to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/10\/11\/science\/gorillas-chimps-friends.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">major advances in our understanding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of their ecology and social structures, and enabling the Park to offer a unique tourist experience.<\/span><\/p><p><b>About WCS Congo<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For more than 30 years, WCS has played a major role in the conservation of wildlife and wild places in the Republic of Congo, where it has contributed to the creation, expansion and management of three of the five national parks.
