Found only in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Virunga Transboundary Landscape that includes Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, mountain gorillas are extremely vulnerable to disease transmission, human-wildlife conflicts, and habitat degradation. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wildlifefriendly.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wildlife Friendly Enterprise Network (WFEN)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in partnership with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/igcp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Gorilla Conservation Programme<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, developed the Certified <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gorilla Friendly\u2122 Program with the aim of protecting mountain gorillas and their habitat. A key component of the Certified Gorilla Friendly\u2122 program is the Certified Gorilla Friendly\u2122 ecolabel, which targets certification of tourism-based entities and community-conservation enterprises adjacent to gorilla habitat. This program also aims to ensure that those who manage, operate, and invest in the tourism industry proactively contribute to the conservation of mountain gorillas. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<section data-particle_enable=\"false\" data-particle-mobile-disabled=\"false\" class=\"elementor-section elementor-inner-section class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, we are thrilled to announce that six community enterprises bordering Bwindi Impenetrable National Park have been Certified <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gorilla Friendly\u2122 under the Park Edge Community Products ecolabel. These <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">community enterprises include\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/changealifebwindi.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Change A Life Bwindi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ride4awoman.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ride 4 A Woman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bwindicommunityinitiatives.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Community Initiative For Biodiversity Conservation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rubuguri-Nteko Handicraft Cooperative Society, Bwindi Community Nutrition Project, and Rubuguri Reformed Poachers Turned Market Gardeners.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This great achievement was possible through the generous support of many donors and partners, including <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), which led a 3-year Darwin Initiative-funded project <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Local economic development through \u201cpro-poor\u201d gorilla tourism in Uganda\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to support the development of improved \u2018pro-poor\u2019 tourism products and services around Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. A number of partner organizations were involved in the project, including IGCP, the Responsible Tourism Partnership (RTP), the Institute for Tropical Forest Conservation (ITFC), and most recently, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcusfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arcus Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Certified Gorilla Friendly\u2122 Park Edge Product ecolabel provides an incentive for local community entrepreneurs to take the lead and be active participants in conservation projects in their communities. Certification creates a win-win situation for the conservation status of mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and enhances local livelihoods within neighboring communities by providing the certified park edge community enterprises with access to premium markets.<\/span><\/p><p><b>About International Gorilla Conservation Programme (IGCP) (<\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.igcp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>www.igcp.org<\/b><\/a><b>)<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IGCP is a coalition programme of Conservation International, Fauna &amp; Flora, and World Wildlife Fund with a mission to secure the future of mountain gorillas. IGCP achieves this through working in partnership with state and non-state actors in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, and Uganda.<\/span><\/p><p><b>About the Wildlife Friendly Enterprise Network<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wildlife Friendly Enterprise Network (WFEN) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">conserves endangered and threatened wildlife species and their habitats through biodiversity certification programs that also contribute to the economic vitality of rural communities. WFEN uses the power of the marketplace to create on-the-ground change by providing incentives for the protection of biodiversity and enabling the conservation of intact landscapes critical to the provision of ecosystem services.
